David Lamb spent a year after high school in the Andean Mountains of Ecuador in support of an orphanage named It’s About Kids.  Through this experience he came to know and love the children.  David was deeply moved by their poverty and real-world struggle for survival.  Boris Salinas, in particular, provided substantial inspiration for this story, as he left home at age eleven and lived on the streets of Quito for several years before arriving at the orphanage.  After completing the University of Texas’ film program in Austin, David returned to It’s About Kids where he filmed the trailer and reunited with his friends in Ecuador. The main characters in the film, Mauricio Cruz (as Sergio) and Lenny Ushina (as Micos), currently live at It’s About Kids and have actually experienced situations similar to those in the film. Safe By My Side is the culmination of the extraordinary character of the children of Ecuador, the wonderful support of everyone at It’s About Kids, and the vision of the dedicated crew.
